Recently, the China Automotive Maintenance Industry Association and the Engineering Research Center for Intelligent Technology and Equipment in Comprehensive Transportation at Dalian Maritime University jointly released the Business Climate Index for the automotive maintenance industry in the second quarter of 2025. From April to June 2025, the index values were 65.6%, 35.7%, and 43.9%, respectively.

The Business Climate Index is compiled based on five dimensions: orders, efficiency, profitability, investment, and expectations, using the diffusion index methodology with 50% as the threshold between expansion and contraction. The data coverage includes all provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the central government, providing an objective reflection of the overall development trends of the national automotive maintenance industry.

The results indicate significant fluctuations in the Business Climate Index during Q2 2025, showing an initial decline followed by a rebound. Specifically, the index decreased by 8.2 and 29.9 percentage points month-on-month in April and May, respectively, before rising by 8.2 percentage points in June. This suggests that the majority of automotive maintenance business in the first half of the year was concentrated in March and April, with a noticeable decline in the index during May and June. Moreover, compared to the same period in 2024, the index showed marked differences: it increased by 27.8 percentage points year-on-year in April but decreased by 14.1 and 6.8 percentage points in May and June, respectively.

For the new energy vehicle (NEV) maintenance sector, the Business Climate Index for April to June stood at 59.1%, 43.9%, and 51.0%, respectively. Overall, the trends and recovery pace of the NEV maintenance index aligned closely with the overall industry index, though with relatively smaller fluctuations. Notably, the NEV index was 6.5 percentage points lower than the overall index in April but exceeded it by 8.2 and 7.1 percentage points in May and June, respectively.

The Business Climate Index across different categories of automotive maintenance enterprises—Class I, II, and III—showed consistent overall trends from April to June, with a sharp decline in May and a moderate recovery in June. Among them, Class I enterprises recorded index values of 64.7%, 41.4%, and 40.1%, exhibiting relatively milder fluctuations. This indicates that market changes had a limited impact on the demand for major overhauls and assembly repairs.
Looking ahead, the China Automotive Maintenance Industry Association, in collaboration with the research center, will continue to prioritize the development of the Business Climate Index as a long-term key initiative. Efforts will be made to refine the data collection system and fundamental indicator framework, leveraging foundational and resource-oriented data to empower new quality productive forces. This will support the transformation and upgrading of the automotive maintenance industry, contributing to its high-quality development.
