How to Properly Utilize Wheel Alignment Lift Turnplates for Accurate Results

Wheel alignment lift turnplates are essential tools for any modern auto repair shop, serving dual purposes as functional parking and storage lifts while providing precise alignment capabilities. However, incorrect usage can lead to equipment damage and inaccurate results. To maximize their value and ensure safe operation, follow these detailed steps for handling turnplates correctly.

Step 1: Secure the Turnplates Before Vehicle Loading

A critical yet often overlooked step is properly setting up the turnplates before bringing a vehicle onto the lift. Each turnplate is equipped with two locking pins—ensure both are fully engaged to prevent unwanted movement. Then, install passing bridges(sometimes called “rubber gap stoppers”) around each turnplate edge. These stops create a continuous, level surface between the lift runway and the turnplate, protecting both the equipment and the tires. Never attempt to pull or drive a vehicle over loose or unsecured turnplates.

Step 2: Avoid Driving Directly Over the Turnplates

Turnplates are precision instruments not designed to withstand the direct force of a driving vehicle. Always position the car so that its front tires approach—but do not drive onto—the turnplates. The rear tires must rest flush on the runways, not on the angled ramps. To prevent the vehicle from rolling backward once in neutral, place wheel chocks behind the rear tires. Using manual force—preferably with two technicians for better control—gently guide the vehicle forward onto the plates.

Step 3: Remove Locking Pins and Gap Stops for Alignment

Once the vehicle is correctly positioned, remove all locking pins and passing bridges (rubber gap stops) from the turnplates. This allows the slip plates to move freely, enabling accurate wheel alignment measurements. After completing the alignment, carefully roll the vehicle backward until the front tires clear the turnplates. Only then should you restart the engine. Once the wheels are fully on the runways, you may drive the vehicle off the lift.

Step 4: Reinstall All Safety Components Post-Alignment

After using the turnplates, always return all components to their original positions. Reinsert the locking pins and rubber stops to ensure the equipment remains protected and ready for the next use. This practice extends the life of your alignment lift and reduces unnecessary wear.

Conclusion: Best Practices for Long-Term Use.

Adhering to these guidelines will not only improve alignment accuracy but also significantly increase the operational lifespan of your equipment. Always remember:

  • Never drive directly onto turnplates—always manually position      the vehicle.

  • Always use locking pins and gap stops during loading and      unloading.

  • Only remove movable components during the actual alignment      process.

By integrating these steps into your car maintenance shop’s workflow, you’ll enhance safety, improve efficiency, and maintain the reliability of your wheel alignment systems.
